A new software package called IceCream (‘Interactive Command Executor, CREAting Modules‘) is described, which can be used as a frame when creating interactive text‐based user interfaces. Also, syntactically complicated command languages can be implemented easily. Several convenient properties are automatically included in the generated interfaces, including expansion of keywords to full width as soon as they can be uniquely identified, the impossibility of entering syntactically incorrect input, and an automatic help facility. The software is almost entirely written in totally portable standard Pascal. The small fraction of code which depends on the hardware is well isolated.
