The seasonal zooplankton dynamics of two coastal water inlets differing in their stage of eutrophication are compared. There are no clear differences between the two waters with respect to calanoid copepods, but they differ appreciably in terms of rotifer biomass. In the more eutrophic water the latter show a pronounced mass development in July which is absent in the less eutrophic water. It is concluded that bacterio‐detritivorous rotifer species are an important regulative factor of the ecosystem which compensates for productivity increases by intensifying heterotrophic destruction.
