The benthic flora and fauna of a large, turbid, northern river was sampled in autumn. Macroinvertebrate communities on bedrock resembled those of smaller streams but specialized Chironomidae larvae dominated sandy substrates. Bacterial densities on rocks were within the ranges reported from smaller streams. Benthic primary production is probably limited by high turbidity so that most of the energy available to benthic communites is probably allochthonous in origin.
