Methods for measuring the primary productivity and the standing crops of an epiphytic algal community attached to Scirpus validus VAHL. are described. Experimental designs to show the accuracy of these methods are discussed and the components of variation are calculated for these designs. Primary productivity is measured using the carbon‐14 technique and liquid scintillation counting while the standing crops are measured using cell counts and chlorophyll a content.
