A computationally inexpensive linked ANN‐optimization model for planning of groundwater development for agricultural usage is presented and illustrated on a canal command area in India. The planning ensures optimization of zonal crop areas subject to the constraints on maximum groundwater table depth and stream–aquifer interflow under dynamic equilibrium. The data required for developing the ANN models of the envisaged state variables comprise an array of zonal crop areas and the corresponding state variables. These data are generated invoking a pre‐calibrated simulation model of groundwater flow. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
