A simple nitrate dynamics submodel capable of predicting the spatial distribution of NO 3 ‐N within the soil profile following N fertigation with urea through trickle irrigation has been formulated and validated. The model utilizes a best‐fit nitrification function which, on a particular day, converts a given quantity of urea into nitrate and also incorporates the cumulative effect of previous fertigations. The daily updated values of NO 3 ‐N of soil layers have been obtained by deducting the N‐uptake by plants calculated on the basis of root length present. The predicted values of NO 3 ‐N have matched reasonably well with the observed data. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
