The ecological conditions of the Hu‐Lu‐Doun and Meiou‐Chen channels of the Taichung Irrigation Association were investigated. The Hilsenhoff Family‐level Biotic Index (FBI) shows that although the water quality of the Hu‐Lu‐Doun Channel is fair, and is better than the Meiou‐Chen Channel, to restore fish ecology ecotechnology was therefore suggested to be applied to the Hu‐Lu‐Doun Channel for priority. Results of numerical modelling, including water velocity and water depth, were substituted into the equation of weighted usable area (WUA) to estimate the fish habitat. The assessment results reveal that the ecological pond is the best choice to enhance the habitat of fish. Five ecotechnologies were therefore suggested to improve the aquatic organism habitat area of the agricultural irrigation channel. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
