This paper introduces the concepts of evapotranspiration (ET)‐based irrigation management, and proposes calculation methods of various ET, and discusses irrigation ET control technology in engineering, agronomy and management. The application and practice of ET‐based irrigation management technology in two case study areas in China indicate that ET control is an effective way to reduce irrigation water consumption, with satisfactory feasibility and applicability, which is a beneficial supplement for improving traditional irrigation water resources management, and is even helpful to realize the sustainable utilization of regional water resources. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
