Abstract This paper was prepared during fall 2005, to inform the USA Senate during a special hearing on October 20th 2005 in Washington, DC (USA), on flood defence developments in the Netherlands. The paper was written as informative background information of a verbal presentation on the subject. The hearing was organized after hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the Louisiana coast at the end of August and September 2005, by the US Senate Subcommittee on Water Resources and the Environment. The subject of the hearing was “Expert Views on Hurricane and Flood Protection and Water Resources Planning for a Rebuilt Gulf Coast”. Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) was invited to inform the Subcommittee on the Dutch Flood Defence System, in the past and at present. The verbal presentation was done by Mr Jan Hoogland, a former managing director of RWS, and during his career as a civil servant experienced in flood control and flood management aspects in the Netherlands.
