This paper introduces, discusses, and illustrates on examples, issues related to revision and updating operations in knowledge bases. Following Katsuno and Mendelzon, the distinction between «belief change» in a static world (governed by Alchourron, Gardenfors and Makinson's postulates) and «world change» in an evolving environment (governed by Katsuno and Mendelzon's postulates) is emphasized. Properties that changes in cognitive states generally obey are discussed, namely, consistency preservation, priority to the incoming information, minimality of the change in a sense to be defined. Cognitive change is considered both when the knowledge base is expressed in logical terms and in various uncertainty formalisms
