The fusion of fuzzy rule-based systems and evolutionary algorithms continues to be the focus of much attention as the basis of computational learning systems. This fusion is particularly appealing because it combines the linguistic interpretability of condition/action rules, the ability of fuzzy systems to deal with complexity and imprecision, and the general purpose, population-based, search method of evolutionary algorithms. This special issue comprises six articles that present recent advances in the field of genetic fuzzy systems. All contributions are revised and expanded versions of papers presented in two invited sessions organized by the Guest Editors at the Third Conference for Fuzzy Logic and Technology. This conference was organized by the University of Applied Sciences of Zittau/Goerlitz, Germany, on behalf of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology ~EUSFLAT! and took place on September 10–12, 2003.
