A lot of debate has gone into what exactly operational excellence is, and how to achieve operational excellence. It is often confused with the reduction of costs or eliminating waste rather than increasing value. The increased focus on integrated processes suggests that it is not achieved by a single group of persons, but requires a collaborative effort from everyone in the organization. Processes should therefore not be applied or measured in isolation, but should be applied in a collaborative fashion to ensure success. Applying systems thinking, we identified six key engineering processes requiring integration to ensure operational excellence in a technical environment.
