The cover art presents in the center a drawing of a Siphonophora from the series of the fantastic etchings of the Art of Science (Kunstformen der Natur, 1879) by Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919), a German zoologist, marine biologist and artist. The lower part of the organism with its helical threads is taken to represent chirality and its intimate association with life, whereas the upper part may well represent the complexity of stereochemistry in this respect. On the background, hemihedral crystals of quartz whose image has been mirrored twice by two perpendicular mirror planes, such that the original image in the North‐East quadrant and the image at South‐West have the same chirality and are identical.
