The advent of gold catalysis has transformed hydroxyalkoxylation of alkynes – once a rudimentary, mercury(II)‐, or silver(I)‐catalyzed process limited to structurally simple substrates – into a sophisticated method that has found application in syntheses of highly complex organic molecules. This transformation can further be combined with carbon‐carbon bond‐forming reactions into domino sequences that allow for a considerable increase of molecular complexity within a single synthetic step. Some recent examples of the development and synthetic applications of these reactions are provided.
