In this review some essential features of the spin relaxation theory in liquid crystals are outlined, with particular emphasis on orientational order director fluctuations and molecular reorientations in anisotropic environments. Experimental relaxation studies using 1 H, 2 H and 13 C nuclei during the past five years are surveyed and compared with existing theories. While the molecular dynamics are relatively well understood in the nematic and smectic phases, more work is needed to further understand cholesteric and discotic mesogens.
