Abstract The effect on NMR data when annulenes are benzannelated is discussed for forty‐three compounds. It is shown that benzannelation reduces the diatropicity or paratropicity of the macrocyclic system and the reasons for this in terms of increased bond localisations in the macrocylic ring are indicated. Examples are discussed where no decrease in diatropicity is found to occur on dibenz (naphth)annelation, and these are shown to be consistent with no change in bond orders.
