The pertinent features of the antisymmetrized geminal power are brought out with a view of describing the chemical bond and the electronic properties of molecules. It is demonstrated that for certain hamiltonians it is consistent with a response function derived from a simple moment expansion characteristic of the random phase approximation. Deficiencies with regard to “size consistency” are pointed out. Simple examples are analyzed in order to familiarize the reader with the nature of the approximations.
