An unambiguous method for the detection of reaction in intramolecular nucleophilic catalysis intermediates is described. The three phase test involves generation of the intermediate from an insoluble, polymer‐bound precursor and its trapping by a second solid phase suspended in the same solution. The hydrolysis of monoesters of phthalic acid and of certain substituted phenyl esters is discussed.
