The phthalideisoquinolines narcotine and hydrastine show anomalous blue fluorescence emissions in glassy media at 77 K, whereas the closely related compound bicuculline, in which the configuration of the C–1 proton is reversed, shows no such effect. We propose that this blue emission arises from a phthalidestilbene system formed by a reversible excited‐state isomerisation.
