Reaction of chlorotrifluoroethylene with caesium fluoride in tetraglyme gives CF 3 CFCl 2 and higher molecular weight compounds which do not contain chlorine, C 8 F 16 , C 10 F 18 , C 12 F 22 , etc. The mechanism of this process, including the production of additional unsaturated sites, is discussed. Chlorotrifluoroethylene also reacts with perfluorobut‐2‐ene, giving mainly C 6 F 12 , C 8 F 16 and C 10 F 18 , and with C 8 F 16 , giving mainly C 10 F 18 , C 12 F 22 and C 14 F 24 . It is now established that reaction of perfluorobut‐2‐ene with caesium fluoride gives C 8 F 16 and C 12 F 22 and it is proposed that this fluoride‐ion induced defluorination is promoted by the formation of caesium polyfluorides.
