Irradiation induced fragmentation of 1,2‐dihydrophthalic anhydride ( 2 ) as well as of its precursor, 7‐oxonorbornen‐2,3‐dicarboxylic anhydride ( 1 ) yields benzene as the major product, accompanied by bicyclo[2.2.0]hex‐5‐ene‐2,3‐dicarboxylic anhydride ( 3 ) and tropone ( 5 ), in wave‐length dependent chemical‐ and quantum‐yields. It is shown that ( 2 ) is the key compound in the sequence, reacting from a singlet excited state and a biradical intermediate.
