Reactions proposed to involve the intermediacy of metal species containing the hydroxycarbonyl group, [M—COOH], are reviewed. Particular attention is given to reversible reactions of Group VIIb metal carbonyl derivatives with isotopically labelled water, which presumably proceeds via a [M—COOH] intermediate, to afford oxygen labelled metal carbonyl derivatives. The current status of the scope and mechanistic details of this oxygen‐exchange reaction is summarized.
