Isoalkanes are brominated by Br 2 in liquid SO 2 in the presence of catalytic amounts of super acids (SbF 3 or SbF 5 – HSO 3 F (1:1 molar ratio – “Magic Acid”)) to yield mono, di and tri bromoalkanes. A possible mechanism is discussed.
