The photochromic modification of bianthrone can be produced through a triplet excited state at room temperature in fluid media, as shown by biacetyl photosensitization and phosphorescence quenching. A triplet state of these compounds is observed at 77 K in a methanol ethanol glass, but it is not established if this is the photochromic precursor.
