The sedimentation behavior of DNA extracted from mammalian cells was studied after fractionated irradiation. Our results show that the injury registered by a second X‐ray dose is not additive to that registered by the first, and that DNA, having repaired its initial radiation damage, is less susceptible to a subsequent irradiation. The following hypothesis is suggested. Repair processes of DNA begin with unmasking of “initiation sites” and that, in time, these become associated with membrane material within the nucleus.
