Phenazine dissolved in a rigid toluene glass is excited to its triplet state by illumination with a modulated light source. The ESR signal is modulated, the nature of the modulation depending on the kinetics of population and depopulation of the triplet sublevels. Modulation of the ESR signal varies across the spectrum because of the dependence of the kinetics on orientation.
