Standard free energy changes of dissolution and hydrolysis of rock‐forming silicates and those of leaching of soluble cations from the same silicates were computed. Correlation between the sequence of Goldich and the order of changes of standard free energies was observed only in the dissolution process. It seems that chemical weathering is governed mainly by aqueous dissolution.
