Changes in scattered light of fresh and aged sodium montmorillonite, suspended in sodium chloride and phosphate solutions after application of very short and strong electrical fields, was studied. Montmorillonite suspensions behave like polydispersed systems. Results of phosphate treated montmorillonite were compared with phosphate‐free montmorillonite, in which a flocculation process took place. The range of particle size for the phosphate treated montmorillonite was calculated.
