The relation between the angular distribution of the non‐reactively scattered molecules in a reactive collision and the reaction probability is analyzed in terms of a classical grey sphere “optical model”. Computational results for a model problem are discurred, and the inversion procedure, for the deduction of an opacity function (reaction probability vs. impact parameter) from an observed and a reference angular distribution, is tested. It is concluded that a simple phenomenological analysis of experimental angular distributions can be based on such an optical model.
