A brief survey is given of pressure broadening theory, with particular attention to impact phenomena. The basic collision processes that contribute to line broadening (such as phase shifts, amplitude modulation, reorientation, and sense reversal) and their effects are discussed. Subsequent line shape expressions for the broadening of resonance lines and the transition to nonresonant line shape are presented.
