Experimental results concerning predissociations of polyatomic positive ions in the gas phase are reviewed. These include the observation of “metastable” ions; photoionization efficiency curves; “metastable” ion decay curves and isotope effects. Examples are given for the three cases of predissociation. Predissociation by vibration is treated in greater detail and the data are compared with predictions of the quasi‐equilibrium theory (QET). Results concerning preionization of polyatomic negative ions are also included. The theoretical treatment of this problem is presented and discussed. Suggestions are made as to possible future developments in this field.
