ω‐Methylsulfinylacetophenone can be added to acrylonitrile or ethyl acrylate in the presence of Triton B. The resulting sulfoxides (II) are oxidised by hydrogen peroxide to the sulfones (III) and are reduced by aluminum amalgam to γ‐benzoylbutyronitrile or the corresponding butyric acid. The structures assigned are supported by infrared spectra.
