Abstract A second mixed valence compound of vanadium was obtained by decomposition of vanadyl (IV)bis (acetylacetonate) by fluoride ions in a nonpolar solvent. The compound has the formula [(C 2 H 5 ) 4 N] 4 [V 10 O 26 F 2 H 2 ] i.e. two oxygens of the previous compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 4 N] 4 [V 10 O 28 H 4 ] were replaced by fluoride ions. The thermal stability, electronic and ESR spectra are described. The properties of this compound are very similar to the compound obtained by addition of a halide ion (chloride, bromide or iodide) to vanadyl(IV) bis (acetylacetonate) in the presence of another metal complex. The mechanism of formation of these compounds is discussed.
