6,9‐Dimethylpurine was prepared from 6‐methyluracil; the key step in this procedure is the selective amination of 2,4‐dichloro‐5‐nitro‐6‐methyluracil with methylamine. Methylation of 6‐methylpurine, gave a mixture of 6,9‐dimethyl‐and 3,6‐dimethyl‐purine, separable by column chromatography. An improved procedure for the preparation of 6‐methyl‐9‐(β‐D‐ribofuranosyl) purine is presented.
