The simultaneous sorption of Fe(III) and pyrocatechol by montmorillonite from aqueous solution at various pH values and the sorption of pyrocatechol by Fe(III) saturated montmorillonite was investigated by chemical and differential thermal analysis and by X‐ray methods. It was inferred that a cationic complex is formed in interlamellar space with an Fe(III): pyrocatechol ratio of 1:1. This differs from the anionic 1:2 and 1:3 complexes previously isolated in the solid state.
