The reactions of cystine, cysteine, tryptophane and tyrosine in aqueous solution with atomic hydrogen, produced in an electrodeless high frequency discharge, were studied. The specific rate constants for the velocity of the reaction of the substrates with H atoms were found to be k s = 1.5 × 10 9 ; 1.0 × 10 9 ; 2 × 10 9 and ∼4 × 10 8 1·mole −1 ·sec −1 for cystine, cysteine, tryptophan and tyrosine respectively.
