A preliminary spot test for the detection of amino groups is outlined. The test is based on the formation of a Schiff‐base between the amino compounds and hexamethylenetetramine with liberation of ammonia. The latter can be easily detected by well known methods. The condensation is carried out pyrolytically since hexamine undergoes some hydrolysis itself and since some compounds do not react in the wet way at all. Some exceptions were observed and are indicated. The procedure is given followed by a list of compounds yielding positive results.
