The purpose of the UICC Multidisciplinary Project was to determine strategies that might be adopted for prevention, detection and management of breast cancer and to define areas of general agreement and disagreement so that directions for future research might be defined. One particular aim was to determine what developments had occurred since the previous two meetings (Carter and Rubens, (1981). Canellos et al. , (1982). This report summarizes the presentations, discussions and conclusions of the group, as perceived by the Rapporteurs. Although we believe it represents the consensus of the meeting, we alone are responsible for its accuracy. The 21 participants reviewed predictive factors in early and advanced disease, options for treatment of the primary comples and the use of adjuvant therapy, both local and systemic. Particular attention was paid to the value of overview analyses. In the management of advanced disease, the use of systemic endocrine therapy and chemotherapy was also reviewed.
