Investigations on 2583 malignant melanoma patients indicated that in both men and women, although there did not appear to be a causal relationship between cigarette smoking and melanoma, smoking did facilitate the spread of metastases. Significantly more ex‐smokers or smokers than life‐long non‐smokers first presented for melanoma treatment with established metastases. Also, in patients with localized disease, metastases appeared within 10 years more often in exsmokers than in life‐long non‐smokers.
