A surgical procedure for the induction of extra‐uterine teratomas in pregnant R rats is described. These teratomas originate from the visceral yolk sac and are characterized by the presence of a variety of well‐differentiated tissues. The tumors have the histological and ultrastructural morphology as well as the biological characteristics of benign teratomas. Their origin and development are discussed in relation to the multipotentiality of yolk‐sac cells.
