Cell clones producing low amounts of alpha‐fetoprotein were isolated from AH66 cell line from an ascites hepatoma producing high amounts of AFP in vitro . The growth rate and the chromosome constitution were compared between clones producing high and low amounts of AFP. No significant correlation was found between the rate of AFP production and the chromosome number. A slight increase in host survival time was observed when the rats were transplanted with low‐AFP‐producing clones compared with high‐AFP‐producing clones.
