Whereas cloning efficiency in soft agarose of untransformed hamster BHK 21/13 cells is strongly reduced when the cells are pre‐incubated with guinea‐pig (GP) serum, BHK 21/13 cells transformed by the Bryan strain of Rous sarcoma virus are unaffected by the same treatment; sensitivity of BHK 21/13 cells transformed by the Schmidt‐Ruppin strain of Rous sarcoma virus is intermediate. It is suggested that GP serum contains heterospecific cytotoxic substances directed against a xenogeneic surface antigen present on BHK 21/13 cells, and to a lesser extent, on BHK 21/13 cells transformed by SR‐RSV; this antigen is not detectable on the surface of BHK 21/13 cells transformed by the B‐RSV but can be “unmasked” after treatment with neuraminidase.
