Ten‐day parabiosis with Friend virus(FLV)‐infected mice induced marked splenomegaly in hyperimmune mice. Infectious center assay showed that only a small fraction of such proliferated spleen cells in the hyperimmune mice were virus producers. In the hyperimmune mice with splenomegaly, no suppression of primary immune response to sheep erythrocytes was induced by FLV infection. The splenomegaly of the hyperimmune mice regressed if the mice were separated from the FLV‐infected partners within 10 days of parabiosis. However, the prolongation of parabiosis in the hyperimmune mice caused an increase in virus‐producing cells, the suppression of primary immune response to sheep erythrocytes, persistent splenomegaly after separation from the FLV‐infected partners, and appearance of typical Friend cells in the spleen.
