The tumorigenicity of SV40 in new‐born hamsters was enhanced by moderate U.V. irradiation (10,000 ergs. mm −2 ) of the virus provided that at least 10 5 viral particles were injected. This enhancement phenomenon was suppressed by the addition of normal virus to the irradiated inoculum. Strong U. V. irradiation (50,000 ergs. mm −2 ) lowered the tumorigenic activity.
