The nature of mitotic host cells observed in transplants of a virus‐induced lymphoid tumour of mice has been investigated. Evidence is presented indicating that they are stromal in nature and not tumour cells. Transplants of this tumour into neonatal or adult mice grow only by the proliferation of donor cells, and the cells of secondary tumours found in the spleens of mice bearing subcutaneously transplanted tumours are also derived from the cells inoculated. The role of the virus in the growth of this tumour is compared with that of the Rous sarcoma of chickens.
