ULTRASTRUCTURAL CHANGES OF THE SURFACE OF BHK 21/13 TRANSFORMED CELLS, DEPENDING ON ADENINE NUCLEOTIDES BHK 21/13 cells transformed by either RNA or DNA oncogenic viruses have a modified surface, as shown, at the ultrastructural level, by an increase in the affinity of this surface for the dye ruthenium red. This increase takes place only when the cells have been grown in the presence of adenine nucleotides. Since the same nucleotides are required for the growth of these cells in agarose medium containing sulfated polysaccharides, it is suggested that this transformation character is related to the observed surface changes.
