Mammary tumours were induced in rats by intragastric administration of 3‐methyl‐cholanthrene. More than 75% of the tumours attained palpable size between 3 and 11 weeks after the last dose of the carcinogen. Adrenalectomy did not inhibit the growth of tumours already present and appeared even to encourage tumour growth. However, the stimulating effect of adrenalectomy was outweighed by the inhibition of tumour growth caused by subsequent removal of the ovaries.
