The distribution of acid and alkaline deoxyribonuclease activities in the subcellular fractions of mouse mammary tumors of C3H mice has been studied. All sedimentable particles exhibit both activities. However, per mg of protein, the mitochondrial fraction is more active with respect to the acid deoxyribonuclease, while the alkaline deoxyribonuclease (exonuclease) shows highest specific activity in microsomes. Further fractionation of microsomes on sucrose gradients showed that exonuclease activity is present in deoxycholate‐soluble structures and not in ribosomes.
