Some 15 years ago the Hydrological Processes Invited Commentaries were instigated by Malcolm Anderson and Jeff McDonnell and I was one of the first to contribute a piece (Beven, 2000). Since then there have been many others, some of which have sunk without provoking much comment, and one of which instigated a succession of other commentaries. But this will, I suggest, be my last contribution in that I have recently formally retired from Lancaster University. It therefore seems a good opportunity to look to the future and offer some advice to any young hydrologists based on several decades of research experience.
