Abstract A randomized double‐blind placebo‐controlled trial was carried out to assess the effectiveness, tolerance and unwanted effects of paroxetine in the treatment of depressive illness. Forty‐one patients referred to a psychiatric unit in a general hospital were included in the study. Treatment lasted for six weeks. The main outcome measures were changes in scores on the Hamilton rating scale for depression and Leeds self‐assessment of ‘Depression Specific’ scale. Statistically significant improvements occurred in both treatment groups, while the end‐point differences in scores show significant advantages of paroxetine over placebo.
